The expansive space and wild beauty of Damaraland in Namibia offers visitors to the continent an exceptional and unusual experience. This ancient land crisscrossed with prehistoric waterways, deep gorges and exotic animals promises an unforgettable African experience.

Guests at luxury lodges in this region can hope to see the rare desert-adapted elephant herds as well as the endangered black rhino amidst a wealth of other wildlife including an abundance of birds and many varieties of buck. Besides the natural beauty and appeal of its animal inhabitants, there are several other reasons to travel to Damaraland. This region is home to ancient rock engravings and paintings, the most famous of which is the ‘White Lady’ of Brandberg, as well as the Petrified Forest, thought to be millions of years old. Moreover, if that is not attraction enough, the Doros Meteorite Crater and Spitzkoppe, the remnants of an ancient volcano, are impressive as is Twyfelfontein, with one of the most extensive and preserved rock art galleries on the continent.

Luxurious accommodation ensures a comfortable base from which to explore the mysteries of Damaraland.

Highlights during a trip to Damaraland include:

  • The extensive San rock art of the region
  • A forest of ‘petrified’ trees estimated to be around 260 million years old
  • Rhinos and elephants that have adapted to desert conditions
