Etosha
The massive mineral pan of Etosha, in Namibia’s first conservation area, spreads out over more than 22 000 kilometres and attracts a stupendous amount of wildlife including over a hundred mammal species (including Africa’s tallest elephants, cheetahs, leopards and lions), more than 300 bird species, a hundred plus reptile species as well as amphibians and an unusual fish species. When rains are heavy and the pans fill with water, thousands of wading birds flock to this region, making for a spectacular sight in Etosha - one of the largest game reserves in Africa.
Visitors to Etosha can immerse themselves in the landscape and magnificent abundance of game including rhino, elephant and giraffe as well as several rare and endangered species. There are many luxury lodge options available in and around the Park, all offering daily game drives into the park with its well-maintained gravel roads leading to the waterholes where game are likely to gather. The best time to visit is during the cooler months between May and September.
Highlights during a trip to Etosha include:
- A visit to a series of famous Baobab trees named after kings and explorers
- Guided tours through the royal ‘palace’ of King Shikongo Josea Taapopi and a royal feast
