One of the continent’s finest wildlife destinations, Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe is located between Bulawayo and the World Heritage Site of the spectacular Victoria Falls, only an hour’s drive away. Covering more than 14 000 square kilometres, Hwange is home to vast herds of elephant, buffalo, giraffe and zebra. With more than 100 mammal species, including eight kinds of predators, this is a superb choice of location for wildlife lovers.
Unique features of this park include the largest surviving group of wild dogs in Africa and ancient fossil dunes where it borders the Kalahari Desert. Luxury accommodation is at the upmarket game lodges of the region, all of which are happy to arrange safari bush walks, game drives or horseback safaris for visitors.
Once the hunting grounds of Mzilikazi, the Ndebele warrior-king, the more than 100 species of mammals, including one of the world’s largest elephant populations, in this national park have not been hunted for many decades and so are quite oblivious to humans. The best time to visit this region is between June and October in the dry months.
Highlights during a trip to Hwange National Park include:
- Extremely large concentration of elephants and wild dogs
- A visit to the fossil sand dunes, held together by vegetation
- Horse riding safaris
