Livingstone & Victoria Falls
As the Zambezi River crashes 100 metres into a chasm stretching 1, 7 kilometres in length, one of the world’s most spectacular waterfalls is created: the Victoria Falls, a World Heritage Site. Mosi-oa-Tunya or ‘the smoke that thunders’ is how the locals describe it.
Livingstone, the nearest town on the Zambian side of the falls, has become the adventure capital of southern Africa. Here you can fly over the falls in light aircraft, helicopters or parachutes, bungee-jump off the bridge or white water-raft down the Zambezi.
Zambia’s wildlife is also a huge draw card – if time is tight, spend an afternoon at the nearby Zambezi or Mosi-oa-Tunya national parks, where you can experience some of the thrill of an African safari. Also nearby is Botswana’s Chobe National Park, which offers a good mix of land- and water-based game-viewing.
Should you wish to venture further into the wilderness, then Livingstone is the ideal springboard. Zambia’s national parks give you the chance truly to be an explorer in remote parts of the country; they include the Lower Zambezi and Kafue national parks, as well as the remote and beautiful South Luangwa National Park.
