Namibia is a country of contrasting landscapes, from the oldest desert on earth, predator-rich game reserves and rugged mountain ranges to modern cities and coastal resort towns. Featuring a combination of colonial German and modern architecture, Windhoek is Namibia’s capital city and the gateway to the region, with an international airport and a host of visitor-friendly facilities.

No trip to southern Namibia is complete without visiting the majestic red dunes of Sossusvlei. The Namib Desert is the oldest and most arid region in the world and has been in existence for almost 80 million years. The large clay pans of Sossusvlei surrounded by the world’s highest red sand dunes are a highlight – an unforgettable, magical sight.

Owing to the vast distances, it is sometimes necessary to fly from camp to camp in small aircraft. Driving safaris are recommended only if you have 10 to 12 days or more available for the trip.

Highlights and suggested day tours during any trip to Sossusvlei include:

  • Visit the Sossusvlei Dunes and the fascinating Sesriem Canyon
  • Explore the desert on a quad bike
  • Discover Bushman paintings in the region or visit the petrified dunes
  • Stargazing is magnificent in the desert
  • Book a scenic coastal flight or take to the sky in a hot air balloon
