The Okavango Delta
Botswana is home to the world’s largest inland river delta, the Okavango. This lush green region of Botswana is in complete contrast to the arid regions that surround it. The maze of lagoons and winding channels is beautiful and captivating. Activities in the region vary according to the location of the lodges and the fluctuating water levels and range from game drives and motorized boat excursions to gliding along the winding channels in traditional dug-out mekoro (canoes).
With nearly a fifth of the country protected as a national parks’ area, Botswana has made its substantial commitment to conservation its most important draw card. Botswana really has only two seasons – summer, from October to April, and winter, from May to September. Most of the rain falls between December and February in short and impressive thunderstorms. From March, the sandy delta waterways fill up to transform this area into a watery haven for a vast array of bird and wildlife species.
The Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve teem with wildlife. Camps situated within the floodplain concentrate on water-based activities such as mokoro (canoe) expeditions, while camps in drier areas focus on game drives and bush walks.
Most of the lodges and reserves in this region are best reached by light aircraft from Maun and Kasane.
Highlights during any trip to the Okavango Delta include:
- Informative walking safaris with an armed professional guide
- Unique and educational elephant interaction available at Baine’s Camp
- Motorised boat and mokoro excursions, subject to water levels
- Avid astronomers will delight in stargazing led by knowledgeable ranges
