Hermanus lies less than two hours’ drive from Cape Town, or slightly longer if you take the scenic coastal route that carves between mountains and sea. Located on the well-named Whale Coast, Hermanus is the winter playground for Southern Right Whales. From July to November, whales gathered in Walker Bay to calve, mate, and put on a spectacular display of breaching and tail slapping close to shore.
Outside of whale season there are still plenty of reasons to visit this pretty coastal town. Stroll the Cliff Path with its well-placed benches, while away sunny afternoons on Grotto Beach (awarded Blue Flag status), and go hiking in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve. The nearby Hemel-en-Aarde Valley has a number of excellent wineries, and a short drive away lies Gansbaai which is famous for shark cage diving.
