Johannesburg

Johannesburg is South Africa’s largest city and the commercial heart of the country. Until recently, most travellers viewed Johannesburg as nothing more than transit city. But that view has changed and Jozi (as it’s is affectionately known to locals) is rapidly becoming a travel destination in its own right.

Joburg has a high-paced energy and ‘Afropolitan’ flavour. The city centre has been transformed by urban regeneration projects in hubs such as Maboneng with its Sunday market, art galleries and vibrant street art. Upmarket Sandton and its northern neighbours is where you’ll find Joburg’s most luxurious hotels and glitzy shopping malls. While south of the city lies sprawling Soweto, a township infused with the history of the struggle against apartheid.
