Transforming through art with Uthando South Africa

As you probably know by now, Giltedge Africa has enjoyed a long relationship with Uthando South Africa, an innovative NGO which does invaluable work raising funds and getting actively involved with a wide variety of grassroots community projects.

Through James Fernie, the director of Uthando South Africa, we were introduced to the Jikeleza Project – an outreach project that runs community-based dance, music and performance to children from the impoverished townships of Houtbay, Imizamo Yethu and Hangberg.

We visited Jikelza’s drumming classes at the Sentinel Intermediate School. Through performance arts, the project develops skills, confidence and employability to children through African drumming, marimba and dance classes. The after-school activities help to keep kids off the streets.
